EarthDay: a Christian Perspective, Bringing Praise to God!

Gen 1:28 God spoke: “Let us make human beings in our image, make them reflecting our nature So they can be responsible for the fish in the sea, the birds in the air, the cattle, And, yes, Earth itself, and every animal that moves on the face of Earth.” God created human beings; he created them godlike, Reflecting God’s nature. He created them male and female. God blessed them: “Prosper! Reproduce! Fill Earth! Take charge! Be responsible for fish in the sea and birds in the air, for every living thing that moves on the face of Earth.”
Today is EarthDay. It is a day to raise awareness of protecting the planet. I have seen reports of events taking place all around the country. There are concerts, tree plantings, river cleanups everywhere. I have seen video on people celebrating full force this day to recognize our responsibility to the earth.
The earth belongs to God! Yes, we do have a responsibility to steward the earth. God gave the stewardship of earth to man as we read in Gen 1:28, when he created Adam and Eve. One of the reasons we were created, was to be care takers of the earth and we should be good stewards of God’s creation; God’s property!
But… we as Christians are missing a great opportunity to worship God, openly and freely when we celebrate this day without giving God the glory for His creation. He gave the stewardship to us to have dominion over all. To use, to Replenish, to protect.
In Luke 12:48 we are told “From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.” We have been given the earth, how are you maintaining it and is it an act of worship to God or has protecting the earth become a god in your life?
Today people will focus on the creation rather than the creator. They will sing songs to Mother Earth, they will dance around in nature as they would never do before our God (because that would just be strange to show excitement and joy over God) God never meant for us to worship earth, but to care for it. He did not want us making it a god that would rule us to where we start making decisions based on what is best for earth rather than stepping back into God’s word for directions on this stewardship.
How powerful it would have been for families to start this day with devotion in God’s word and singing praises to Him. Why, once more, have we put God away in a box and not give Him the glory for the earth. Why do we let fear of what others may say or think if we publicly stand and hold the conviction of the God appointed stewardship of earth.
The stewardship of earth is just one aspect of our relationship to God. It is when we put it into perspective to our relationship with God that we can truly make an impact.
So for all my fellow Christians get out there! Go celebrate our stewardship but do it as a worship to God, giving him the glory that is His due. When you sing songs, make them worship songs to God. And if someone asks you why you are passionate about EarthDay, let them know that it is a time to focus on the stewardship God has appointed us and praise Him for this responsibility.
