I often get the opportunity to sit with people who want to know the basics of getting their budget/spending under control. This usually happens because they are over stressed in their finances and are overwhelmed. Sometimes they have just put their head in the sand and ignored their issue causing the problem to escalate until they face financial devastation. I am by no means a financial advisor. I just recommend simple tactics that I have learned from other sources.
In learning these simple tactics, I have come to understand very basic economics. When you have more payouts than you do income there is a deficit problem. You can increase your revenue by different means like work and investments but most people, if they do not economize and change their spending habits, they will continue to be in a downward financial spiral.
If you can understand these principles on a personal financial level, you should be able to understand why it is so important to get our national debt under control. We are currently over $19 Trillion in debt. Federal spending is almost $4 trillion, but revenues is just over $3 trillion. Even at this rate if taxes were raised to 90% for the top income earners, we still would not be able to balance our budget and in the process we could collapse the economy as the top producers may choose not to produce anymore.
Group after group are clambering for federal funds. Group after group feel their cause is worth more and more funds from the government. Everyone thinks their issues are deserving of more funding. There are even movements that support everyone’s cause and demand increased funding for all. The problem is, we have a spending problem. We have been overspending for years in the US. We have a debt that equals our national GDP each year.
There is a movement to finally put us on a more practical spending plan. To reduce spending and get us back to a more prosperous nation. But the opposers react in horror that their causes are facing cuts in funding. They have been working so long on someone else’s dime that they loose sight of responsibility to the people who fund their causes. The have been at the “teat” of the government bank roll for so long that they do not even know if their cause is one that the American people even feel is worthy of their hard earned funds.
I am not here to judge anyone’s cause. I think there are some worthy issues out there that need funding. But who should be funding them? Is it the US governments responsibility to fund research how we ride bicycles so that a better bike can be made. Why can’t bike manufactures fund their own research? Or seek funds from sports enthusiasts?
We need to get back the governments responsibility based on the Constitution and funding turtle tunnels is not one of them.
So to all those who have made it this far in the reading and are upset that the government wants to decrease spending for your cause, look in to your children’s eyes and think about the tax burden you are wanting to continue to put on their shoulders because it is the next generation who will be a slave to government taxes with the current spending that is happening. When you protest, don’t protest government reduction, but promote private funding for the causes you are passionate about.
